A discography compiled from old betley-a-logues, the internet archive and the BWCD discogs and rateyourmusic pages. The earliest catalogue I have is from '96(ish) so very early releases are probably incomplete. The descriptions under titles are all Phil Todd's from various times in the 90s and early 00s.

Crackly shellac oddities montaged neatly by the TEA C gang.

Incredible live overload from these notorious Florida rock monsters. Tapes, occilator, bass, gtr and true metal mouth.

WAGSTAFF "DOUBLE ALBUM"
There was Jandek, there was Jean-Louis Costes, there was Leslie Q. Now a new voice from the top of a different well. A bizarre collection of "events" for your imaginary canary to enjoy...

WARSER GATE "REVERED LIES: VOL. 2"
Expressive rock, played with a higher psychedelic reverb-drone than usual, i.e. the best stuff I've heard by em.

WHAM-O "A SPLENDID DAY"
A splendidly noisy day, spent in Olympia, WA.

WRONG/DAS LUDICROIX
Split tape of these two improv-rock giants-in-the-making.

CD-Rs

ASHTRAY NAVIGATIONS "COBRIDGE RED CHURCH AND OTHER VISUAL SPLENDOURS"
Very lengthy disc from 1998 which was meant to have a "proper release" back then via a label who are now pushing up proverbial daisies. Very different from recent ASHTRAY material, cleaner and with more recognizable instruments/sound sources. I still like this lots, though. Full colour jewel box package!

ASHTRAY NAVIGATIONS "HEAVY FLOW OF TRAFFIC OR BLIND FAITH"

ASHTRAY NAVIGATIONS "THOSE ARE PEARLS THAT WERE HIS EYES"
Continuing our "rescue" mission - a reissue of a CDR originally issued by Solipsism back in '98. One long 48 minute piece with a sea change to suffer. Many peoples' favourite ever Ashtray entity, available once more. 2nd edition of 30 copies in full-colour non-jewel box luxury.

ASHTRAY NAVIGATIONS "TRASH MOBILE"
CD single from 1998 reissued. Power electronics and decaying acoustics. Reissued in a more prosaic black and white cover this time around.

"BETLEY WELCOMES CAREFUL DRIVERS COMPOSERS SERIES Volume One: East-Berlin"
Two extremely minimal tape compositions, featuring plenty of the mandatory static and hiss, by Daniel Löwenbrück and Jürgen Eckloff.

COCK E.S.P./LASSE MARHAUG "VIKING BLOOD"

COITS "DESIRE RUNS FROM ME (+2)"
First CD by this one man project who had a much-coveted LP of knowing guitar primitivism on the Very Good label some years ago, plus a couple of split 7" releases. This CD collects material due for an LP and two 7"EPs, all recorded mid-to-late 90s and unreleased until now. Stark and imposing guitar/raw feedback electronics. First edition ltd.50.

CRAWLSPACE "THE RISE AND DEAR DEMISE OF DIMENSION FIVE"
Guitar duet betwixt Eddie Flowers and Greg Hajic which straddles the stools of free improv and out-psych-guitar. Colour cover.

CULVER "PLASTIC SURGERY"
First digital-format release by this under-appreciated participant in the UK home-made drone circus (And occasional TOTAL/SUNROOF employee). Strangely self-contained electronic/percussive hover. First edition of 50 copies in packages handmade by the artiste.

DEEPKISS 720 "ON"
Brighton legend with a variety of sonic happenings, ranging from mutant hip-hop and turntable noise to guitar/trumpet improv. First 50 copies are packaged in hand-made bags made from a sheet used in the live aktion-painting performance included on the disc. Full colour jewel box also.

DOGLIVEROIL "THE BLACK ART OF DOGLIVEROIL"
Unreleased material from 1998. DOGLIVEROIL at its most noisy and intense. Lots of feedback and raw percussion. First edition ltd. 20 copies with black CD playing surfaces!

HUMECTANT INTERRUPTION/GOVERNMENT ALPHA "PSYCHOTROPIC RETRE DING" £9.00 Fine collaboration of two very different noise stylists. Humectant's tape squelchings are perfectly aligned with Govt A's high-speed pyrotechnics. Limited to just 50 copies and packaged in cosmic green plastic retre circles - a real eye-and- ear boggler.

JARVIS/JOINCEY/TODD "ALL ABOARD THE GOOD SHIP MARGINALIA" £6.00
Third CD. Ten new improvisations. More aggressive this time, but also more subtle and sensitive. Two guitars, korg organ, oscillator and acoustic guitar harmonise quite beautifully here. First edition of 50 copies in lovely metallic-look covers.

JARVIS/JOINCEY/TODD "SCOURING STATE AMPLIFIER"

JARVIS/JOINCEY/P.TODD "STOPPED CLOCK FOR PREMATURE RETIREMENT"
Four improvisations recorded summer 1999. Quiet or loud, depending on whether or not we wanted to drown out the metal band rehearsing next door.

JULIAN BRADLEY "REASONING WITH A GONER"
20 minute CDEP of tunneling drone timbres from this Yorkshire gentleman.Second edition of 30 copies in less extravagant packaging this time.

KEMIALLISET YSTAVAT "VARISEVIEN TANSSI" (3" CDEP)
If Kemialliset Ystavat aren't the world's best Finnish avant-folk-psych-improv act (though we're sure they are), they've gotta be the one with the most pronounceable name. With recent recordings, they've been taking things in a direction that the easily-deceived could be hoodwinked into believing to be lost 60s underground artifacts, though parts of this new CDEP could make you believe it stems from medieval origins. Careful inspection of the contents reveal it to be music of the early 21st century, though. But what is this "time" business anyway? Either way, the fact that "Varisevien Tanssi" gets THERE in just over 18 minutes means that it won't waste much of yours. And the cute 3"CD format (for the first edition of 50 copies, anyway) means it won't be wasting much space either.

MITTELWINTERNACHT '71
"Shit, man? What's kosmische for "illusion". Klang! Hammond organ and guitar apocalypse. It just carries on phasing...disappearing...phasing...disappearing...furry-freakin'. Ahhhhhhhh...takes me back to my mate Wolfgang, us stoned on the floor of his caravan in Torquay when we were 14 year old Heads. Still, who were "Edward Fraser and Christopher French"? Was this really recorded way back in "21-22 Dec 1971"? Is the man with the midiverb having us all on? Put it like this, the kids who believed in Santa were the coolest in the school, right?. Right! And for those of us still feel obliged to space? Yeah!!It's a fucking riot that our Zweistein tribute band back in Tamworth never even got close to" - Uncle Florian, "Schlagwerk Heritage Gazette" This is a CDR limited to 50 copies.

NOGGINSTADT "QUANTUMLIBET SECRETAM"
Live improvised collaboration between members of MONOSTAT 3 and NOGGIN.

OLD BOMBS/WOLF EYES
Split CD of cheap technological wonder from two U.S. projects. OLD BOMBS (featuring Carlos Becker of MONOTRACT) present abstract sampler/tape mush. WOLF EYES (incorporating Hanson Records supremo Aaron Dilloway and UNIVERSAL INDIAN John Olson) start off in similar territory but wind up with a set of "songs". Ltd.50.

THE PRE-PUKE TAPE
CDEP of home-made string scraping and bass clarinet abuse from the late 1970s, the seeds of what would eventually blossom into the ZEBRA PUKE album.

SHIFTS "7 MONOCHROMES"
Minimal guitar and Korg synth treatments from the legendary Frans De Waard. Lovely colour cover too.

TARGET SHOPPERS "BAD BEAR ACT"
Live show from late December '99. Treat it as a "Life In Stoke-On-Trent" documentary disc and you'll be OK. Colour cover.

TO LIVE & SHAVE IN L.A. / KF36 "PETER CRISS VS. PETER CHRISTOPHERSON" Experimental collab between Tom Smith's Merry Men and a long-disappeared UK tape-spew project from some years back, finally offered up for CD-R release.

WAGSTAFF "THICKNESS KNICKERS"

WAGSTAFF "UNTITLED"
Conceptual release of near silence, just minimal static and abstract sounds. Strangely moving. Colour cover with text.

WAGSTAFF "WAGSTAFF WOULD NOT GO TO THE OPERA"
Thirty minute conceptual noise/folk release from this English institution/constitution. A three part meditation on love, racial awareness and the "high art" question.

CDs

A WARM PALINDROME / FEVERDREAMS / BADGERLORE "THREE OWLS SIX EARS"
Three-way split CD featuring 20 minutes by each of these three acts. A WARM PALINDROME you should know from our Betley LP. The tracks here are a lot more cohesive and direct than the stuff on that record (despite being recorded over a 12 month plus period). FEVERDREAMS is a solo electronic/guitar project from California, playing miniature, textural and heavily-processed pieces. BADGERLORE is a duo featuring an ex-DEERHOOF and Ben Chasny a.k.a. SIX ORGANS OF ADMITTANCE. They play raw string/pick-up improvisation which magically transforms itself into song form by the end.

ANNA PLANETA
Double CD! BWCD's most impressive act of commercial suicide yet. Live digital field recordings of sounds made at or heard at a huge abandoned Catholic school house near Alton Towers theme park in England. Recorded over a two-year period, using only acoustic and battery-operated instruments and played around sounds generated by the buildings themselves. Hear decaying corridors creak, wind hammering fragile glass, drone sounds in cavernous cellars and more. Screenprinted cover.

ASHTRAY NAVIGATIONS "FOUR RAGA MOODS"
Four long coach excursions into the mists of ersatz exotica, utilizing instruments as varied as harmonium, fuzz guitar, dictophone field recordings and wind-up gramophone.

ASHTRAY NAVIGATIONS "TRISTES TROPIQUES"
New CD, much-delayed and much-modified (two years in the making). Languorous and delirious instrumental pieces for broken equipment, psychedelic guitar and compromised electronics. Co-released with Blackbean and Placenta in the USA and Rhizome in Australia.

ASHTRAY NAVIGATIONS/UNIVERSAL INDIANS
Split CD, co-released with American Tapes. Each band contributes an LP-length track - what a bargain. huh? The Blues like you never heard it. Lots of field recordings, tape hiss and ancient sounding inscriptions. In wallet cover with inserts.

GREEN MONKEY "THE LOTUS FLOWER WILL NO LONGER BLOSSOM UPON YOUR ISLAND"
Yep, it is finally out...much-delayed debut CD (made in Australia where pressing plants take their time) of fast and deafeningly loud power trio improvisations by Phil Todd (ASHTRAY NAVIGATIONS, ANNA PLANETA, DOGLIVEROIL...), Joincey (WAGSTAFF, INCA EYEBALL...) and Doog (FIVE O'CLOCK BLOODSHADOW, SPY VERSUS SPY...). Guitar or moog soars above intense 5-string bass and drum spasms and the whole thing teeters on the brink of collapse, reflecting the spontaneous recording circumstances, bathed in the glow of the towering amp.

MONOSTAT 3
First non-cassette release by this trio of Adris Hoyos (ex-HARRY PUSSY, TRANSMISSION etc) and Priya Ray and Robert Price (both of KREAMY 'LECTRIC SANTA). An hour long collage of live and studio freak-outs. Cro-magnotic improvised punk noise fuck-you, like a cross between Hijokaidan and Musica Electronica Viva and a bar-room brawl. Cover features erotic art by Graham Lambkin. And this is the only CD in the world that definitely ISN'T titled "Experiment 7.3"...

PAIN JERK & DOGLIVEROIL "THE SNAKE CHARMER'S BEAUTIFUL DAUGHTER"
Harsh noise and subtle mind-manglings from Tokyo and Stoke on Trent. Both bands have a go at mutilating each others' source material, then take a long track each.

REYNOLS "- - - - - - -"
Yep, everybody knows about Argentina's legendary REYNOLS trio (Downs Syndrome drummer/vocalist, high daytime TV profile, opera for thousands of chickens, live show given to an audience of plants, conceptual CD of tape hiss etc. etc. etc.). This, their first widely-available UK release, concentrates on the free rock squall and textural hover that is their essence. Co-released with Blackbean & Placenta in the USA.

"SCENES FROM RINGING ISLE"
A few copies (the last ones I think) creep back into stock of this ever-popular 2xCD compilation. Features FLIES INSIDE THE SUN, SUNROOF!, SALVATORE, SURFACE OF THE EARTH, R!!!S!!!, CAMPBELL & BRADLEY, ASHTRAY NAVIGATIONS etc. Has not disappointed, or at least not much.

TO LIVE AND SHAVE IN L.A. "TONAL HARMONY"
20 minute CDEP which contains the best SHAVE works to date. Lots of "celeb guests" too, which add to the (then) core lineup of Tom Smith, Rat Bastard and Ben Wolcott. The first track sees Tom Smith's Multi-tracked vocal croonings twinned to the guitar of the ELECTRIC EELS ' John Morton, then Simeon of the legendary SILVER APPLES joins Smith and Wolcutt for the nine minutes of "The Snake Whose Head Would Not be Crushed". The CDEP ends with two unbelievably fast and intense cut-up pieces, the final one including guitar parts by Bill Orcutt (ex- HARRY PUSSY). As subtle and intriguing as the colour cover art (another fuckin' Betley first...) which was solely responsible for the near- year long delay in the release of this thing.

WRONG "IN THE WRONG"
Specially-priced double CD co-released with four other labels. This is the Minneapolis improv/electronica/noise-rock sound that everyone is talking about. If you can't hear them, its because they are talking quietly. Features members of COCK E.S.P., LOST IN TRANSLATION, ROME, MALTA, POST-PRANDIALS etc.

VINYL

LATHE-CUT

ASHTRAY NAVIGATIONS "CRACKING"
Thirty minutes of hypnotic, psychedelic acoustics and electronics.

ASHTRAY NAVIGATIONS "THE OVERFLOWING BONE"

INCA EYEBALL/THE SUBS

IRON LION ZION "SELECTIONS FROM THE FORTHCOMING ALBUM OF TRUE RASTAFARIAN CULTURAL DUB "BEAT I WOMAN FE' RESPECK""

LPs

A WARM PALINDROME
First LP by a new group featuring Phil Todd (ASHTRAY NAVIGATIONS etc), Andy Jarvis (ANNA PLANETA etc), Joincey (WAGSTAFF etc), Mikarla Jarvis (BIRMINGHAM YOUTH ORCHESTRA etc) and Solomon Kirkland (FLOWERTRAP etc). Twelve tracks - some of them actual songs with actual lyrics on such diverse subjects as poet Allen Ginsberg's expulsion from mid-60s Prague or the inventive police statement of two pre-pubescent would-be murderers. The music combines elements of sampler/acoustic improv attrition, electronic bleeps and glitches, cavernous rock guitar spectacle, flowing drone melody and bizarre erotic folk-rock tangents. It all fits together surprisingly well and we think you won't have heard anything quite like it before. Honest.

ARCHAIC BRAILLE "OSSIFICATION DURING IMPROVISATION"
Co- released with Swill Radio. Cosmic space jazz improv. or some such, recorded way back in June '95 in a room in Brighton with a very high ceiling. Hand-made cover.

BIRCHVILLE CAT MOTEL "LION OF EIGHT THOUSAND GENERATIONS"
First vinyl LP by this hotly-tipped New Zealand-er. Entirely recorded live and in concert, with a proper audience present throughout, and featuring more organic and flowing sounds than any of the "studio" releases. Hear reeds exhale, sound clusters swarm, real human beings talking quietly in the background. Only recommended for humans with ears. Limited to 200 copies in hand-made covers.

WHAM-O
Acoustic guitar and warm electronic noise glow from Portland, USA. Co- released with about a million other labels.

5"s

EVIL MOISTURE & COCK E.S.P. “MONSTERS OF COCK”
In the noble tradition of cram-it-all-in, we present 350-plus tracks of collaboration betwixt these noise titans on a record the size of a margarine carton lid. Six years in the making and co-released with about a million other firms. Full colour cover.

7"s

AUBE "AUTODECISION"
Aube's Akifumi Nakajima can make subtle and original noise from ANYTHING, it seems. So we sent him an Executive Decision Maker (an 80s novelty yuppie toy which makes important business decisions for you amidst a cacophony of bleeping noises) and the result is this very fine single (pressed on contemplative green vinyl). Not only is this a fine noise record in its own right, but it'll assist any important decisions you need to make - just play the record before you go to sleep and the answer will reveal itself to you by morning. Try it - we swear it works!

AUBE "AUTODECISION" - Special Edition
For those of you with BIG decisions to make! This package contains the aforementioned record, plus an additional cassette of the sounds of the Executive Decision Maker and a T-shirt (so you can wear your decisiveness with pride!) of Akifumi's stunning computer artwork Ltd. to 50 and, unlike the Merzbow Tea Culture cock-up, we plan to have this ready at the same time as the regular edition.

ASHTRAY NAVIGATIONS "THE ORIGINAL WOODEN FOREST"
More guitar/moog/electronic psychedelic free-sound action in a nice card sleeve. Deep-listening music for people with wooden heads. 300 copies!!

THE CAVITIES "THEE ASTROIDS HAVE HIT OUR HEADS"
Find out what happened when gremlins got to the first pressing of the "monitor" comp.

DEL/GREEN MONKEY
Co- released with Apartment Records and Jazzassin Records of the much- admired Norwegian domains. Two noisy avant- rock trios rock out on two SONIC YOUTH "jams" and we even con good old uncle Thurston into writing the sleeve notes. DEL features Mr. Lasse Marhaug, GREEN MONKEY you should know from their BWCD 7", SONIC YOUTH you should know for their apperance on "The Simpsons". Limited to 400 copies, silly vinyl colour, "proper" cover, etc.

GANG WIZARD/ASHTRAY NAVIGATIONS 7"
Ltd.200 and co-released with Blackbean and Placenta. I've not heard the Wizard side yet (!), but expect heavy guitar/organ tones if previous form is anything to go by. Ashtray present more rummagings through the glamour-dustbins. I'm wishing on a star that this will be out and ready for ordering by the time you read these words.

GREEN MONKEY "A RUBY IN THE SAND IS LIKE CHOCOLATE IN THE WATER"
Thus grandly entitled by Marky Loo Loo and Paula Hayes of THE SUBS, this 7" offers a distorted slice of power trio wall. Entirely improvised by Todd, Joinson & Doog. The crudest psyche- rock freak- out of your dreams, viewed from within the fuzz pedal. Cover depicts the grave of Mr. Hans Bellmer. Vinyl depicts absolute green-ness.

INCA EYEBALL "LEAVE THE COUNTRY"
Titled as a sardonic riposte to M.E.V.'s rural hippy platitudes, or maybe a Quentin Crisp-esque plea for mass emigration, this is the best and possibly the last release by this Stoke-On-Trent improv-pop duo who have been confusing the minority since 1992. Their first recording in stereo and including 39 tracks of spontaneous song composition, this EP is limited to just 200 copies and co-released with London's esteemed Kylie Productions imprint. Precipitate the word exchange.

JOHN CLYDE-EVANS "528 STEPS"
Mr. Evans' much-loved solo acoustic string drone record. Much loved everywhere, so hurry up if you want one 'cos we have only two copies left (though there may be a re-press at some stage).

KJETIL D. BRANDSDAL & JAN CHRISTIAN KYVIK
Newest work by Norwegian master Brandsdal (here taking guitar and "sound effects" as implements of choice) joined by percussionist Kyvik for a more "expansive" (and better recorded!) journey than usual. Ltd. 300

MAMARRACHO "FIFTY NINE"
Noise, scum-rock, electro and Jehova-knows-what-else from these Yokohama brothers (and past Gerogerigegege co-conspirators). Co-released w/ Destroy All Music. 300 yellow records only!!

MERZBOW/TEA CULTURE

THE NEW PECULIARS "A MORE WITHERING CRITIQUE THAN HARRY PUSSY"
Second 7" by the Borecky-and-Foust dynasty. Five new numbers mixing punk brut and raw improvisation, including a hot rendition of THE PRATS pre-pube garage classic "Bored". Packaged in another very lovely Lambkin cover.

THE NEW PECULIARS "THE FUTURISMO E.P."
Scott and Karla of IDEA FIRE COMPANY and THE PICKLE FACTORY are joined by Karla's parents (who I believe are new to the "free noise" game) to make a very fine racket which once again proves that you Can't Trust Anyone Under Forty these days. Down With The Tango, indeed. Beautiful Graham Lambkin cover. Ltd. 300.

THE PSYCHEDELIC SOUNDS OF SMELL & QUIM AND TEA CULTURE
Only 200 of these, and it's a co-release with SHF, so it effectively sold out before it was pressed. I may still have a couple of copies left when you read this, so it may be worth a try.

ROBOTNICS CROSSING "TRIGGER HAPPY E.P."
Absurdly-delayed! No wave, tape squelch and electronica are blended perfectly by these Berlin gals, who you may or may not know from their appearance on several Digital Hardcore compilations. No breakbeats here, though. Comes in anarcho-nostalgia poster cover and, if you shop early, a free transfer is included too. As relevant to modern culture as the day it was recorded.

"SOLDERING THE FUCKIN' SOLITUDE MONITOR"
Yes, you thought it was gone for good, but the teeniest thimblefull of copies were returned by a distributor. One track each from REMORA, COITS, GHOSTDAD and ASHTRAY NAVIGATIONS. Volume two still due eventually...

SUNROOF "PEACH FUZZ"/"HYMN"
Another Giardia/BWCD handshake, and the firstborn of the new project by Mathew Bower (ex-TOTAL/SKULLFLOWER). Strings and keys swirl and reverberate in a very lovely, and even "pop"-esque manner. Hand-painted covers by Mr.Bower himself.

TO LIVE & SHAVE IN L.A./CERAMIC HOBS
Split release, containing the best material I've (honestly) heard by both these long-running combos. Tales of suicide, degradation, insanity and hope seep out of this Florida/Blackpool divide. Single of the century. Only 300 copies, kiddies...

TRANSMISSON "EP #1"
Graham Lambkin and Adris Hoyos’ No Wave band.
